Well personally I've read more than enough general 'What I dislike about the romance genre' threads to last me a lifetime, haha. But then I've been around the community for a while, it's always the same complaints. Would most posters here be surprised to hear I don't like secret baby books? LOL Only so many times I can or need to say it so I usually stay out of the general threads like this
I don't see it in the same light as discussing the pros and cons of a book, that is interesting and even more so when there are opposing views.
The thread about when you decide to give up on a book was interesting to me because it wasn't just..name series you've given up on. For all of us there are many of those. This thread was asking about what the tipping point was, what finally did it for you, so to me that's more interesting to read then simply I gave up on...A, B, C, etc.
My guess is that even if you posted a thread asking posters to name what they love about the romance genre, all it would take is for a member (say me for example, haha) to say I like alpha heroes or small towns and the thread will turn into a what I hate about the romance genre, lol. I think it would be next to impossible to keep it an entirely positive thread, even if that was the original intent. But hey, maybe that's a challenge? *G*
Eliza, I wonder if you'd be happier staying in the Let's Talk Romance Novels section of the forum? You're going to get your individual book discussions there while in Potpourri you'll likely continue to to see a lot of negative threads head up the boards. Nothing wrong with taking a break from something if it's starting to rub the wrong way.

| I miss the rousing heated discussions over the ATBF essays; I'd like them to return, maybe transfer the AAR blog to these boards. So I appreciate Eliza's efforts to get something similar started. |

Transferring the blog to the boards is a great idea, I only ever come to the boards so I never read the blogs. I bet that's the case for many!

Thanks, Linda. I don't doubt your advice or overview at all. The Let's Talk does have a few book threads, but mostly it has become a "what's this book?" list which isn't really appealing to me. So, thanks. Right you are. And it gives me more time for reading, too.
Thank you, dick. I always looked forward to your posts: articulate, concise, and right on target. Every. Single. Time. |

I'm not really seeing an overall dissatisfaction with the genre of romance.
To me, readers are frustrated with certain elements (different for everyone, of course) that appear in the books they are reading and need to come somewhere to vent.
My current frustration is sex taking the place of deeper intimacy between the characters, especially early in their relationship. Sometimes I just need to talk about it!!! |

Not to be critical of a few of our readers’ thoughts on the accessibility of AAR’s blog but reading it is as simple as another bookmark and getting in the habit of visiting it every day. There are some fascinating discussions and you truly are missing out if you don’t take a look on a regular basis.

Hmm...I didn't really see anything inherently negative or against the genre, so much as the regular topic cycles on these boards.
But I too miss ATBF. I read the blog and love the contributors, but a blog feels rather transient in that a post from today will fall into the background by this time next week, whereas ATBF was one essay linked on the main page, and the comments section just doesn't have the feel of talking and responding on a message board. |

Hmmm...I propose that if a poster hates the negativity, they should start a cheerful thread, and ignore the negative. It might work. _________________ "As you wish"

Yes, there are some "Why I don't like X" threads and heated debates here, but the online romance community in general and AAR in particular is one of the friendlier online places to hang out.
I used to hang out a lot on the online science fiction and fantasy community where things can get very ugly very fast, if you dare utter an unapproved opinion. And if you think AAR posters dislike too much about the romance genre, you have never hung out among Doctor Who or Star Wars fans, who hate pretty much everything about their chosen interests to the point that you often wonder why they watch the show/films at all. _________________ http://corabuhlert.com

I guess I don't really agree with you on the fact that there are so many negative threads on the boards, but that's my perception. I think I see it more as readers posting their opinions and thoughts and sometimes they're not so positive. But I totally agree that the Let's Talk about Books section has turned into "Name this book." When there are so many individual request threads, the rest of the threads are pushed down and difficult to find. Wish they'd use one thread (like we do for Recently Read Books, Recently Watched Movies, and the eKindle Books).
In regard to the participants in the discussions here, I think Cora stated it quite well in her post below.

I am one of the readers who loves to help out with different book searches as well as post them. I love it because I find many great books to read that way.
While I understand your frustration I don't like you suggestion for only one thread in which to post "Need title" book searches. I've seen those kind of threads on some other sites and I find them convoluted. Often it is hard to tell who is looking for which book and which book search has been solved.
However, I would welcome a Book Search Forum that is dedicated to finding those elusive titles. |

I just went back and took a second look at the Let's Talk Romance Forum, you are right in that most of the threads there are asking help to find a certain book. I'd never noticed before but then I do spend more time in the Potpourri forum. I wonder if people have grown tired of discussing specific books? There seems to be less now than there was before. Maybe people really are more interested in talking about what they like and don't like in general rather than individual book discussions.

*shrug* I thought it was a good suggestion, I think some of us are just stretched thin when it comes to our online visits to various sites and when they're split into so many different sections it can be a bit much to keep up with it all. I visit the three major forums here and that's enough, even then I don't always get to the chat board or check out the new reviews as much as I used to.
But whatever, carry on! If it's working just as it is no need to change it.

Lately, there seems to be quite a number of title requests on the Let's Talk board. Maybe we are all collectively losing our memories. LOL! _________________ "As you wish"
