Although I have a Nook, I prefer not to buy books from Barnes and Noble, because I want the books to outlive the ereader. But I have some B&N giftcards to use. Does anyone know if I buy a book from B&N that is also sold through Smashwords, say, will they have added DRM to the B&N version?

If you download it through the BN site, which you will have to do if you are using a gift card, it will depend on the book. It is up to the publisher on that site about the DRM but it will be an .ePub so you won't be able to use it on kindle. If you get it through smash words it shouldn't have a limiting DRM.

That is my understanding anyways, I have an iPad but my mom has a nook and we have been looking into cross platform stuff for it.

If it doesn't have DRM, the format is immaterial, because it can be converted. No way to tell that I know of, though... they probably would rather people didn't know. Laughing

It's hard to say, B&N uses their own DRM but not every single book has it. Personally I remove the DRM on all the books I buy but some people might not be comfortable with that. I noticed a lot of the free classics and some of the 'romantica' did not contain drm, but there's no way to tell without purchasing first.
