there is a B&N just up two exits from here- about 15 minutes so that works for me. Also, I love getting free stuff and discounts so the things you mentioned hold real appeal for me. You mentioned the chidlren's books..that's what got me started thinking about getting the color version. I saw a sample of a children's board book on the Nook and I was pleasantly suprised at how nice it appeared. I think the boys might enjoy reading that way since they love electronic gadgets. Just another point in the Nooks favor. Still, I'm enough of an Amazon buyer, that its holding me back from just buying the Nook. What a dilemna and only about a week left to decide! |

I hear ya, I purchase a lot from Amazon as well- HC books, CD's movies, clothing, etc. I love Amazon! But I also love the bookstore experience so the tie-in to B&N is great for me, I was always a B&N member before and got all my paperbacks there since they were never discounted at Amazon. I like sitting down with a cup of coffee, reading, browsing the shelves, etc.
I really don't think you can go wrong with whatever option you choose.

Funny, my Overdrive library has tons of (older) Kleypas and very little else. Dribs and drabs of interesting books - one or two of a series, very annoying. However, I'll be getting cards at other libraries in my state and that will open up the options considerably.
Netlibrary is pretty much useless for romance, in my experience. Though I don't know if it varies from library to library, like OverDrive does. _________________ "I say, don't read the classics -- try to discover your own classics; every life has its own." -- Rudolf Flesch, _How to Make Sense_ |

Claire, I was just thinking that it would be a good idea to go into Best Buy and try both, if you're able to. I really think there's nothing like trying before you buy. Or just get them both, and return whatever one you choose. I know it can be a hassle to return one but it would help you make your decision to put a book on both and see which one you enjoying reading on more.

My problem with the Sony Touch 600 is that I can find books by author, title, or date but there's not side column like on the Sony ps-505 where you can go directly the the letter alphabet of the author or book title. With the Sony Touch, I have to go page by page to get to my author or title.
Regarding the battery life, I've heard it said that if the Wi-fi on the Nook. is turned off, the battery life increases, and other similar settings to preserve battery. For the Touch, there's not many options in battery preserving choices. In all honesty, I've not noticed any discernible difference regardless of what settings I choose. What's even more headache inducing is when I started a book on the Nook or Touch on day one, but did not use the device for a day or two, the battery still went down prettty fast! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Just recently, for 2 weekends in a row, I decided to pick from my collection of favorites, and read my old fashioned print books. It was so NICE to read, stop, start, etc...without anything problems getting in the way. And I got to enjoy my beautiful hand crafted bookmark at the same time! Oh wait, I did have to adjust my eyes to the much smaller print, but that's only because I've spoiled myself on resizing my books on the ereaders.
Don't get my wrong. I do like my e-readers very much despite advances that still need to be made and glitches to be worked out. There's just that unexplainable warm feeling of holding the print book, looking at its cover, and flipping through the pages. |

I've used the Sony 500, 505, 700 and 600, and just got a 950 yesterday. All the touch versions (700, 600, 950) can get to most titles in contents with less clicks than the 505.
There is a narrow alphabet strip down the right side of the table of contents. Touch in that strip to jump to that part of the alphabet (it even does correct proportioning within titles with the same first letter), then use ordinary page forward/back if you didn't jump to exactly the right page of contents. Even with over 2,000 titles loaded, the alphabet strip usually lets me get within a contents page or two of the title I want. |

These claims of 2 weeks or 30 days of battery life are pretty specious. It seems to be 2 weeks or 30 days if you read about 1 - 2 hours a day or about 100 pages. At least the Ipad and Color Nook are up front (if overly confident) in telling how many HOURS you'll typically need before recharge.
So far on my Nook (found it pretty easy to set up once I got the hang of the touch screen keyboard - but how do men manage with much larger fingers?) I think I'm getting 20-25 hours (in airplane/non wi-fi/3g mode) - or about 4-5 books but then I've yet to run the battery down past 50% (I'm so used to recharging other stuff I usually just hook it up when I'm doing others). I don't mind getting 1/2 of the battery life of the Kindle since I love the touch screen on my Nook which is what eats up power. Not just the color covers books but being able to flick pages with a short swipe of my thumb. But am I getting much less than I should be and should I have them replace the battery?
How many hours or page turns are you getting from your devices? _________________ "My safe word is monkey" |

I think you are getting what most Nook users get, though I've never counted page turns. When they quote days of battery life I have no idea how they factor that since one person may read for half an hour a day, another several hours. I charge mine about once a week, depending on how much reading I'm doing. That's fine with me, I charge my cell phone every night so it doesn't seem like much by comparison.

Just to report back--I ended up getting the Kindle for my daughter. We went to another Best Buy store and they were all lined up--she went down the row and tried them all. Hands down, she liked the way the Kindle was set up, the way the screen looked, the ease of navigation. So it's going to be all Amazon all the time for us now. It's fine--I have to agree with her--I liked the feel of the Kindle best myself. I was tempted to get one myself, but I am going to wait and see how this one works out first. _________________ For the first time in her life, she saw exactly what she’d thrown away when she decided to have him by means fair or foul……that she’d not saved him but wronged him by consigning to him all the ability of a box turtle to make his own choices. ~Gigi |

Congrats on your purchase! I really think the best way to make a decision is to try before you buy. Being a very visual person myself so far Amazon can't complete with the color LCD on the touchscreen. If they came out with a version this I could be right there behind you! Or even better, if color e-ink screens hit the market, which I think they might some time next year.

Not entirely... you can also get mobipocket or pdf books from other sources. _________________ "I say, don't read the classics -- try to discover your own classics; every life has its own." -- Rudolf Flesch, _How to Make Sense_ |

Yes, it was interesting--I kept asking her if she didn't like the different options and touchscreen system and visuals on the Nook, but she liked the simplicity of the Kindle--it just made sense to her. _________________ For the first time in her life, she saw exactly what she’d thrown away when she decided to have him by means fair or foul……that she’d not saved him but wronged him by consigning to him all the ability of a box turtle to make his own choices. ~Gigi |
