| Did anyone else watch last night? When Viserys Targaryen appeared on screen, played by a dyed-platinum Harry Lloyd, it was my immediate thought - finally, someone who could play Francis Crawford! I am four books in to the Lymond Chronicles so he is fresh in my head, but I am dying to know why no one has optioned these wonderful books into movies. |

No kidding! Now I'm tempted to sub to HBO so I can check it out! _________________ "The Bookshop has a thousand books, all colors, hues and tinges, and every cover is a door that turns on magic hinges." ~ Nancy Byrd Turner |

| I don't have a TV, and my computer is so old waiting for movies to download is torture, but if anything could tempt me to buy a TV it's "Game of Thrones". The cast list is one temptation after another: Sean Bean (although I don't understand why in the past few years he has had roles that require such awful hairstyles), Nikolas Coster-Waldau, and now Harry Lloyd. BTW, imdb.com says that Lloyd is a descendant of Charles Dickens. |

I watched, but I'm sorry to say that I only read the first Lymond book and I'm still trying to figure out what it was all about. Thank God there wasn't a reading comprehension quiz that went along with it!
As far as GOT goes, I didn't read the books and was a little leery of getting on board such a comprehensive tale, but really, who can say no to Sean Bean? I plan on staying with the series as I'm intrigued. I recognized Harry Lloyd from a Doctor Who episode. Love those English actors! _________________ Why put off til tomorrow what you can put off until next week? |

I went ahead and resubbed to HBO, I was going to do it in June for True Blood anyway!
Lymond is always fresh in my mind, even though I read the books years ago. He and Jamie top the charts for all time best heroes.

| Haven't read the Lymond books, but I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode of Game of Thrones last night. My dad watched it with me. Not sure that fantasy is his thing, but he seemed to like the first episode. Or maybe it was just the naked boobies that he liked? |

Well, I'm fuming as I'm currently stuck in a country with absolutely no access to HBO or Sky or anything and I've been DYING to see GAME OF THRONES for years - ever since George RR Martin announced the possiblity and especially since I heard about the casting. Grrrr...
I've only read the first Lymond book and wasn't impressed by the guy. I don't mind annoying characters - I obviously love George RR Martin's books for one - but I got the feeling that I was meant to find Lymond enigmatic and charming when all I wanted to do was smack him round the head repeatedly. However, I was told that he does get a whole lot better.
Not sure that playing Viserys Targaryen would be the best stepping stone to Lymond though. Very dissimilar characters. I do love Viserys' storyline - it made me sit up and think "Wow! This really isn't the same old same old!". I was to think that at least once in every chapter after that though. _________________ "Socialism to help sick people - bad.

| I am not at all sure if the actor playing Targaryen would have the chops to play Lymond - he and the gal playing his sister stuck out a bit to me as not having the same level of talent as Sean Bean or (who I think is absolutely marvelous as Tyrion) Peter Dinklage. All I know is that he fits my mental image of Lymond. |

Oh I don't know that Lymond gets a whole lot 'better' as far as what you have issue with, he will always be a smart-ass and can be very cruel when he wants to be, he can also blow you away with his compassion and loyalty. I may want to smack him in one moment and hug him in the next. I loved him from the very first scene when he broke into his mother's house so I'm not an entirely impartial judge! *G* But if you didn't like him in the first book I don't think you necessarily would in the books that follow. What happens in the books that follow is that you come to understand what has motivated him and why he has done the things he'd done, some actions that seemed cruel and pointless are learned to have a higher purpose. He is a hero that walks the edge though, for sure, a sharp blade of an edge.

| I ended up liking him but being massively disappointed by his eventual romantic match. It's hard to express without being spoilery, but she just wasn't a match for him in any area. He was brilliant, physically and mentally, and she was... fine. |

Keeping the fantasy theme here, Lymond reminded me a lot of the main character in a fantasy series - Janny Wurtz's MISTWRAITH series - in terms of how bloody annoying I found him. Just *tell* people what you're plotting and why!!! Goodness sake, you'd solve half your problems right there. It's all very well being private and enigmatic and all, but not when you score totally unnecessary own goals in the process. Yes I know, self-loathing, tormented, blah blah blah. Get over it. Grrrrr....
That said, Dunnett is a much better writer than Wurtz so Lymond might actually make more sense as a character. I may well have been riffing off my frustration with Arithon when I was reading that first book.
Still annoyed at not having seen the first episode and now missing the second of GAME OF THRONES. Not fair. I want my Sean Bean NOW!!! WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! That said [or more precisely wailed], my favourite character in the books is an ugly, bitter, sardonic and over-sexed dwarf. I'd cheerfully choose Tyrion over either Lymond or Arithon . A lot more fun! _________________ "Socialism to help sick people - bad.

Her 'ordinariness' is one of the aspects I really liked about their match, I thought they complimented each other beautifully! After everything he'd been through she was exactly what he needed. It made perfect sense to me that she was the one that took his heart. I've never been a fan of matching characters that are 'the same' - same level of brilliance and beautify, same level of physical prowess, etc. I like balance, ying and yang. Her quietness to his loud, her gentleness to his viciousness, she that is lovely in an ordinary way to him that will turn every head in the room. None of this to me makes her less and him more, rather they compliment each other. I don't think DD could have chosen better for him.

There are times I wanted to shake Lymond and yell...Just tell him already! Especially when dealing with his brother, absolutely maddening at times. Lymond had no problem allowing others to hate him if he felt it was for the greater good, he was in that way a martyr. I don't think those that love Lymond and this series would necessarily disagree with you on that aspect but it is part of who he is and to change any of that would have taken away from the whole. I hope that makes sense. I guess what I'm trying to say is, what makes Lymond so special contains the good and the bad. If the author were to clean any of that up to make him more palatable at times, it would have lessoned the impact of his character as a whole. He was perfect in so many ways but she gave him flaws as well, and those are some biggies.
