Anyone saw the 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables on PBS? I thought it was cool how they brought all the other casts from past production for an encore. Alright, don't hate me Jonas Brothers fans but I thought Nick Jonas as Marius was a poor choice. I'm sorry but he cannot hold his note. His parts sounded short and stilted. He's getting outsang by the guy playing Enjorlas (who was awesome).
But overall, I thought it was terrific but then I love Les Miz (and Miss Saigon) so I tend to watch it when its on TV. The main parts that were especially brilliant were Fantine (Lea Salonga), Javert (Norm Lewid), Thenardier (Matt Lucas), and of course Valjean (Alfie Boe). I once read a book that describes the difference between Dumas (Count of Monte Cristo) and Hugo (Les Miz). The writer said that Dumas was all about justice but Hugo was about grace. Classic, heh? _________________ Crimson. Eleven. Delight. The smell of dust after rain. |

I have seen about half of it--taped it last night. I've seen the show seven or eight times over the years--huge fan. This Enjolras was just stunning--one of the best I've ever heard. Easily overshadowed Nick Jonas, though the guy has the perfect look for Marius and I think he did a good job with the emotions of the role--he just doesn't have that huge broadway belting voice like Michael Ball did--no one can top him as Marius, ever.
The 25th anniversary production is stopping at the Ahmanson in LA--tickets went on sale recently, I believe. We are mulling over heading up to see it--I want my kids to see a professional, full scale production of it--there are a lot of local community theatres doing it lately and just can't do justice to it like a professional company can. _________________ For the first time in her life, she saw exactly what she’d thrown away when she decided to have him by means fair or foul……that she’d not saved him but wronged him by consigning to him all the ability of a box turtle to make his own choices. ~Gigi |

Apparently this guy (Enjorlas) is famous on the West End for playing The Phantom. I know they're trying to appeal to the younger audience by casting Nick Jonas, but he just doesn't have the pipes for it. And of course, Michael at the end (the encore), sort of showed him up, like "hey kid, this is how you sing this." 25 years later, Ball and Colm Wilkinson and Frances Rufelle and the other original cast still got it! _________________ Crimson.
