I mostly enjoyed Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife & The Amber Spyglass) when I read it several years ago, but I was very disappointed by the ending. I described it as 1,000 good pages followed by 100 pages I didn't care for. My sister just read it a few days ago after seeing a DVD of The Golden Compass, and her reaction was "the ending sucked".
There was an SF novel I read many years ago that ended with the ultimate cop-out: and then he woke up. |

I know its not a romance but let me just throw my vote in for the ending of Karin Slaughters Beyond Reach in the Grant County series... aaaggghhhh what a miscarriage of justice to the unsuspecting reading public, BEWARE.....& be afraid....
After 5 previous books my sweetheart Jeffrey & his wife Sara have remarried & are FINALLY happy after years of heartache...so what does the author do??? She blows him up (literally! ), in the last few pages of the book!!! Not only that but we are treated to all the gory details as his bodyparts & innards go flying across their front lawn!!!!!!!! Jeffrey was the heart & soul of those books & to go on without him is...is..is..there are no words...crazy IMO....why not kill off the vile, self pitying, on her way to becoming a serial killer Lena????? Now thats a killing I could've cheered on....
I also hated the way Suzanne Brockmanns last Troubleshooter book, Dark of Night, had the couples end up...desperate dorky stalker Dave with beautiful damaged Sophia??? And lovely secretive alpha male Decker with airhead Tracy....I mean Really???? Thats it!! After teasing us with a hinted decker/sophia HEA for 7 previous books (yes count 'em 7!) & making us wait 5 years... for that ending!!!! I gave up reading her then & there.... |

I was mad. Really, really mad. I go back to read the earlier books but you can bet your ass I pretend she never wrote the last book. |
I react similarly, for very similar reasons, to the last "Flambard's" book by K.M. Peyton, preferring to think of it as a stomach-flu induced hallucination I once had than an actual existing book. _________________ "I say, don't read the classics -- try to discover your own classics; every life has its own." -- Rudolf Flesch, _How to Make Sense_ |

Thanks for the heads-up! I've been think of watching this but didn't know there were two versions. I would not have been happy with a tacked on death. |

Gah.
Don't get me started on that one.
Jesus.
I started reading number 14 a couple of months ago and I am still trying to finish it.
I just can't force myself to read more than a couple of pages at a time. Both pairings make me queasy. What a disappointment.
At one time, I was even scouring the internets for some kind of fanfiction with Sophia and Decker. Yes, I was THAT desperate.
*sigh* |

ROTFLMAO!!!!
Yeah & the irony is if the storylines had've been switched(& without all the baby pleasing & creepy stalking from dave) & it had've ended up Decker/Sophia & Dave/?his blow up doll(not Tracy I wanted her with Izzy..& dont get me started on his mental case child bride!) I could've enjoyed the book as it was a better story than the last few with all their tween speak...what was Brockmann thinking?...I cant bear to even reread the older books now knowing how it all turns out. jeezus maybe I should look into the fanfiction as this ending still p*sses me off 4 months later!!! |
