I'm not sure if this has already been discussed here but too lazy to look it up. Anyway, have just seen THE OUTSIDER with Naomi Watts and Tim Daly based on the book by Penelope Williamson and was completely blown away by it (re-watching it while typing out this email, it was that good) so a BIG thank you for those of you who recommended it.
Are there any other romance novels made into films that you would recommend? Unfortunately, the only other ones I have seen are Barbara Cartland ones which, gorgeous costumes not withstanding, are something I'd watch for comedy rather than romantic value...
Also, I've been told that Hallmark's SOME ENCHANTED SEASON is fantastic but I can't seem to get my mitts on so if any copy via Amazon or ebay or even Hallmark's website. Any hints?

I saw a boxed set of Nora Roberts DVDs at a local video store, but I didn't check it out. I guess they were movies based on her novels?

Lifetime TV helped produce and air four NR books a year or so ago. They are in the process of doing four more. You can find more info on the Lifetime site and on NR's site.

I just can't stomach the cheese-factor of a Lifetime Movie. I don't know if The Outsider was on Lifetime or not (I own a copy of the movie). If so, it is probably the only one I've watched from the beginning to the end. Love that movie. It lacks the syrup of the usual fare on Lifetime. Anyway, In Her Shoes was pretty good (Jennifer Weiner) with Cameron Diaz. I thought it followed the book very well. Also, The Wedding Date based on the book, Asking For Trouble by Elizabeth Young was just okay for me. I liked the book much better, but a fairly decent movie.
Not a romance novel exactly, but The Time Traveler's Wife was very romantic and the film is to be released in Dec. (?).
I would like to see Tracy Grant's book, Daughter Of The Game on the big screen or Penelope Williamson's, Heart Of The West. And whatever happened to Outlander on film? Years ago, I believe they had a screenplay all ready to go and...nothing came of it. |

If you like Nicholas Sparks, a few of his books have been made into movies... The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, and a new one, Nights of Rodanthe, I think. There might be more, but those are the ones I'm aware of.

| The book Tim by Colleen McCullough was made into a movie quite a few years ago now with a much younger and much better looking and a lot less of a kook Mel Gibson. I'd read the book first but was very impressed with the movie. |

Yep - that was what impressed me about The Outsider: it was clearly a romance but was a serious one as well. Made me remember the time when Hollywood actually did proper romances as opposed to unfunny unromantic rom coms. And I loved the last scene when he just hands the reins to his stepson, puts his feet up and leans back with his arm around her as they ride off (figuratively) into the sunset. Got that same feeling you get as you close the book on a particularly satisfying romance.
I heard that the Time traveller's Wife was being made into a film - a bit in two minds about that as I simply loved the book. As for Nora Roberts, I;ve never been able to get into her books so I'm a bit hesitent about the films. However, f I was going to order one, which one would be a good one?

The only tiny problem I had with The Outsider was the wig Naomi Watts wore, but other than that it was a lovely movie. Gotta love Tim Daly in that duster too. I was a new fan, then and there. As for Nora Roberts movies...I have no idea which one to order. I did read Montana Sky ages ago, but haven't read anything else by her for quite a while. I'm not her biggest fan and like Lifetime even less as they remind me of mini soap operas...boring.
The Time Traveler's Wife movie? I am thinking the same as you. I love the idea of a movie, but hold the book so dear, I am afraid of being disappointed. Still, it's exciting to think that it might be very good. |

Oh yes, that duster... My rational mind kept thinking how impractical that thing was but the rest of me was just - woah, give me some more of that  !
It reminded me not only of Witness (for obviously reasons) but also of a really great old Western romance called Yellow Sky. This was starring Gregory Peck back when he seemingly specialised in playing the sexy bad boy in Westerns that girls fall for despite themselves. It's one of those films which could have been written as a romance masquarading as a Western.

It reminded me -- A LOT -- of the 1940's western, "Angel and the Badman," starring John Wayne and Gail Russell. Wayne plays an injured "bad guy" who is taken in by a Quaker family and nursed back to health. Russell's character falls in love with him. He sticks around, is changed by the experience, and manages to help the family and community with some of their problems. The only difference is that his presence brings the really bad guys to the community, so there's a bit more about his own personal battles and what the real nature of his ... nature is. It's actually a very good movie. |

I've got the film but a really bad copy of it so I didn't get past the first few minutes. Also, apart from THE SEARCHERS and that Irish film with Maureen O'Hara, was never really much of a John Wayne fan. Might have to give this film another shot as am now in Western romance film mode...

I've seen "Angel and the Bad Man" many, many times. If you can get a clean copy of it, it's worth it. It's a very good film. It's a movie with a younger John Wayne before he developed all those "John Wayne tics." Just naturally him acting a part.
Good, good film. Highly recommended to those who love romance.

So I went to go see TWILIGHT last night, and saw a sneak peak for THE TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE starting Rachel McAdams!!!! I didn't even know this was getting made into a movie!!! I can't wait!  |
