| I read AAR's review of this saga. I have a particular fondness for books set in the eighteenth century and I thought Patricia Veryan's work sounded really promising. There's a big problem though. I tried to search these books online and I found that they are rather difficult to find - and dreadfully expensive. Just out of curiosity, is this saga really as good as it seems? |

| Yes!!! It is very good, Jitterbug. I love Veryan's writing. Have you tried your local library? Veryan's books were very often issued as hardbacks so they might be easier to find there. |

Does this series need to be read in order? I found the 6th book at a used book store--can I read it first?

Alas, I'm not American and I believe the Golden Chronicles' books were never translated and published in my country!  I'd like to buy them online, but even if I found them used&cheap it'd still be quite expensive [6 books + shipping costs - overseas...] - that's why I'm interested to know if they're worth it  |

Oh, rats! Well, I think they're worth it, but I'd hate to be responsible for your expenses if you didn't like them:) I will say this, if you like adventurous, sweet romance you'll love them. I think of them as a sort of Jo Beverley's Company of Rogues or Mallorens without the sex. Though there is tension. And the mystery runs throughout the series. They're quite good reads. |

I love these books and yes, it does help to read them in order - especially as the characters come back and evolve throughout. Thinking especially of the hero of the 6th book who starts off as an outright villain in the first and generally guest stars in all the books leading to his one. Also the mystery/adventure subplot continues throughout.
That said, you can read them out of order as they're perfectly fine by themselves - they're just better together ...
In terms of expense, it depends if you like the style of a trad regency but set in Georgian times. I'd try getting something like "The Tyrant" as that's normally not too expensive and it'll give you a flavour of the books before jumping in and buying them all.
I'm another non-american so I do sympathise with the cost of things. If you're in France, the American Library in Paris carries all of the Golden Chronicles books (that's where I first read them). I was squealing when I found them all there!!

Yep, for me it is. They are the books that brought me back to romance after a self-imposed absence.
As for reading them out of sequence, you can do it, the first one I read was Cherished Enemy, but it's better if you read them in order. But since they are very hard to find, that might be your only option.
Another thought is to get them from the library. I know our library carries them as they were also published in hard cover.
Keep in mind though - they are kisses only books. But the romance in them is beautiful. The heroes are very noble and the heroines are very strong. My favourite one of the bunch is Love Alter's Not - but they are all well worth searching for!!!!!

I've found a place where the prices of Veryan's books are within my reach, I'm going to buy some of them, that is Practice to Deceive, The Tyrant, Love Alters Not.  The wait will be quite long, 3-5 weeks, but I'm very happy - here's one more reason to look forward to summertime

I can picture your reaction perfectly... when I first started reading romances I combed every bookshops in Turin possessing an international section  Nora Roberts, J.D. Robb, Janet Evanovich are very easy to find. Others... not. In comparison it seems that Chick Lit books are everywhere - unfortunately I don't like them very much  .
That's one of the reasons I love internet - in addiction of amazon and such, I found the possibility of buying ebooks so very convenient. I will always love a paper edition more, but, well, little is better than nothing at all, right? |

Absolutely! My grandmother, who got me reading romance in the first place, introduced me to Patricia Veryan. I love, love, love the Golden Chronicles. She has all of them, so I never realised how hard they were to find until I wanted them for myself!
About reading them in order - well, I did read them in order, so it's hard for me to imagine not doing so. Please, whatever you do, don't read the 6th one first! Roly is one of my favourite heroes ever; his evolution from villain to hero is so beautifully done - I really feel like it's something many authors can't pull off that well anymore, but Veryan had 5 previous novels to acquaint us with his bad deeds, and he doesn't change overnight. I love The Dedicated Villain so much. Though I rarely cry when I read romance novels, I've literally had to put the book down to compose myself when reading this one.
If you enjoy this series, don't hesitate to try to hunt down the Tales of the Jewelled Men series. As a whole, I think the Golden Chronicles is better, but I love both. And once again, she saves the best hero for last with August Falcon and The Mandarin of Mayfair, whose romance with the heroine blossoms gradually over the course of the series. |

Not to take the thread OT, but it's probably my second favorite after Devil's Cub. I read it when I was about 16 and I STILL have my very tattered original paperback edition which I must have bought after discovering Heyer at my library.

OMG (as my 15-year-old says)! I found Patricia Veryan when I was 15 and still pull out several each year to re-read. Golden Chronicles is definitely worth it and reading them in order makes them more enjoyable as you watch the characters develop (especially Roly). My favorites of all her books, though, are still the first two I ever read: Love's Duet and Mistress of Willowvale.
Sometimes, you can find good deals on e-bay for Veryan paperbacks. You might also try posting to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/veryan/messages. Sometimes, they will offer up copies for others to share for minimal or no cost (except for mailing, of course).
It's great to hear when someone discovers one of your old favorite books or authors. It brings back that rush of pleasurable discovery. Good luck in completing the series.
