Are there any romance novels along the same vein as Jane Eyre?

-Governess
-Gothic
-Strong, independent heroine
-Great brooding hero
etc
etc

Mary Stewart's Nine Coaches Waiting. Older but still good.

Christina Dodd's governess series definitely has elements of Jane Eyre. I liked the first six quite a lot.

Also, Meagan McKinney's Gentle With the Night is a great older gothic one.

Try Victoria Holt. She wrote in that gothic vein, with a young woman and an older mysterious hero. "Mistress of Mellyn" comes to mind.

Kristen Callihan's Firelight was very Jane Eyre-esque.

The Jane Eyre-type story is my favorite!

Here are a few that have some or all of your needs:

Susanna and the Spy by Anna Elliott (would-be governess, Regency with strong Gothic overtones, independent, strong heroine, enigmatically attractive hero)

Sea of Secrets by Amanda DeWees (Oriel is not a governess, but she's very similar to Jane Eyre otherwise. Great heroes)

Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt (Traditional Gothic - heroine is a governess, brooding hero)

His Dark Kiss by Eve Silver (governess, brooding/scary hero. I haven't read this one, but it's in my TBR pile)

I've always thought Elizabeth Hoyt's "The Raven Prince" had a touch of Jane Eyre about it (although that could be because of the way the hero and heroine meet). It's fairly light tone-wise though.
