Anne McCaffrey, The Skies of Pern (2001, but I hadn't gotten around to reading it previously). F/sf. The plot is a bit scattered, with too many elements that include both futuristic Luddites and a tsunami, but I'd give the love story between F'lessan and Tai a B+.
I particularly rather enjoyed F'lessan's ongoing annoyance with his mother's friend Mirrim who still remembers him as the irresponsible teenager he was twenty years earlier and freely spreads that assessment of him around to all and sundry, in spite of the fact that he's matured by his mid-thirties into a responsible position, a teenaged son of his own, and general adulthood. |
