One more...Slow Heat In Heaven by Sandra Brown. This book seems to be hated by some, loved by others. Not for the faint-at-heart. **shrug** Cash, the hero, has been described as a snakebite. Still... _________________ Miss Willard at first refused to get into a lifeboat, and so an exasperated officer said, "Don't waste time-let her go if she won't get in!"
It's not really a favourite theme, but I don't avoid it unless there's a big age difference. It creeps me out a bit if the older hero has known the heroine since she was a little little kid, and as others have said, especially if she's idolized him since she was prepubescent. Don't know why, it just gives me the 'bad, no!' feeling. Not a big fan of the ones where hero's been in love with the heroine forever, either.
I can like it in theory (and really this is how most of my relationships got started) but in practise the twists and turns these stories take don't often appeal to me. I think I'd prefer one where they *both* realise their feelings for each other within the course of the story, ie neither's been pining for the other.
Maybe it's a rare case (for me, I don't usually have this problem) of something that feels too realistic so I'm criticizing it...like I have been through this, and when it's written about in a way where I'm like 'huh, that doesn't feel right...' it strikes me wrong.

I really like this theme, but only if it's where while they grew up together there had never previously been any romantic feelings between them. They have been friends for a long time and have dated other people (and possibly married, but are now either widowed or divorced) and only recently has something changed that made them look at each other differently and begin a romantic relationship. Stories like this seem to be hard to find though.
Like others have mentioned I hate it when the heroine (it always seems to be the heroine ) has been pining for the hero her whole life and while he has been busy sleeping his way thru the entire female population she has remained a virgin. I also dislike stories where they had been previously involved (usually as teens) and are separated for a long while and then get back together.
So I'd say, in answer to the original post - I only enjoy a small subset of the 'grow up together' theme.

Oh, how I hate that, too!
What's worse is when the "hero" pines for the heroine but never *does* anything until she finds someone else - someone who actually asks her out and treats her nicely. Smacks of sour grapes.
