It seems that our internet company wants to start charging more for bandwidth use. Does anyone have a simple way for idiots (like me) to measure how much bandwidth we're using? We download very little, but my daughter is a Youtube hog, and does some on-line gaming with the Wii. Thanks in advance.

Bandwith is related to the speed that your computer uploads text and images as given by your cable provider. You can test your speed with several different websites. Try this one.

http://toast.net/

On the left side of the home page, in the second column down, it says something like, "test your internet speed." Go to that page and choose "shuttle" and it'll tell you how fast your computer takes to upload this image. You can choose "text" also, anything really. When the image appears, read further down for another explanation of bandwith.

We have WOW and they used to charge us according to the speed you chose. Obviously, the faster speed cost more, but it may be worth it if you use your computer a lot. Good luck.

Thanks for the information, Tee. My concern is more with amount than speed. I need to figure out how much bandwidth we use over a month...

Oh, sorry, I can't help you with that. But maybe someone else could do that. Good luck.

I checked with my son, who knows computers but is not a super expert by any means. He said most likely the ISP provider can relay that information to you (as I'm sure you knew). And he suspects, on your own end, there are probably some programs out there that can be installed that operate in the background and monitor your usage, but he's not aware of any specifically that he can name.
