I don't run into my name too often (April) -one or twice the heroine but more often the easy girl. I too get a little weirded out with the brother thing - Kevin -not so much anymore becvause it is such a popular name - but Lee - still icks me out a little bit because it doesn't pop up too much.  And dad - forget about it -James is just too popular a name in romance.

Interesting topic - That has occurred to me while reading my husband's name as the hero (Robert). Nana - I usually have a reaction one way or the other: When I like a heroine in a book a lot (and of course have to love the hero), I easily can imagine myself in her role as I read when it is written by her POV. This has been quite interesting when the hero's name is Robert ("The Duke" by Galean Foley)! My husband got the benefits of that steamy association! (HA!  ) Not so much when I don't care for the heroine! Then I have Nana's reaction - especially those TSTL types.
I never see any "Kathie's" but have seen one "Kathleen" (my actual name). Kathy (Cathy) is usually the "plain, best friend" or "cheerleader" type if included in a contemp. It's just too boring to be the lead (Wuthering Heights (not my personal fav) aside). Plus when it's not spelled like my name, it doesn't feel like me for some reason, when it's the written word.

Names used to bother me, to the point where if I'd encounter a hero or heroine with the same name as a beloved Heyer character, I would feel all weird. But obviously, as a historical romance reader, and someone who reads rather more than a book a day, I had to get over that.  Now I can read books with my son or husband's name and barely notice.

Well, Charlotte, dead spider. I hadn't thought of that connection and now I'm not sure how I feel about it. I have always thought the only good spider was a dead one, but it was Charlotte…

I'm writing a Rebecca now. you probably won't like her. She's being a bit clueless right now.
Names are really important to me too. If the character doesn't have the right name, it's like they aren't quite there.

| I only mind if a character is named after my brother. I have two, but one has a VERY common guy's name, so it doesn't bother me when I see it in fiction. However, my youngest brother has a pretty rarely seen name, so when I stumble across a romance with a hero with the same name...ick. I can't read it at all! |

Marianne- If you can overcome your hesitancy, I highly recommend Marianna. Quite an excellent read. Definitely a keeper for me.
Don't think it would affect me one way or the other reading about a heroine with my name. But my son has a very unusual first name (it's more commonly a surname in another country).
In the last couple of years I've seen two different paranormal romances that have heroes with the same first name as my son. At first I thought, hey cool! But considering these ladies write very(!) hot/erotic lovescenes, I had to take a pass on reading those books.
Just don't want those images actively dancing in my head in connection with my 20yr old.   I think if his name was more common I wouldn't have this problem, tho. oh well.

My boys are young, but I think I would have to agree with this sentiment. It's always bothered me a little that Judith McNaught used her children's names as the main characters in Whitney, My Love. I don't know if I could do that.

I have to thank Nana Massie for providing me with a name for my heroine in the upcoming "Marrying the Captain." I think it's a charming name, so I wrote to her and asked permission. My heroine's name is actually Eleanor, but everyone calls her Nana.

Well, I'm Caroline, or Caro, so I'm only able to identify with desperate Other Women and/or snobs in romance books. Had to read Ashworth's "My Darling Caroline" just because but can't think of any other books with the actual heroine as a Caro or Caroline. It's becoming rather traumatising actually - maybe us Carolines are just not worthy of love [sniff sniff]...

| If you think having a romance heroine sharing your name is odd (though I tend to get the scheming other woman), try sharing your name with a romance publisher. Because my first name also happens to be the name of a German romance publisher which mainly publishes translated Harlequin and Mills and Boon titles. The company was already around when I was born, though I don't think my parents were aware of that. |

This is a confusing statement to me, Carla. Could you explain why permission was needed to use a name? Aren't they literally all up for grabs for authors? I just cannot imagine an author sending 50,000 letters out to "Nancy" to use their names. Or even if an author made up one in her own mind, others out there probably have it as a name somewhere. Where would receiving permission to use names ever end? Just curious. |

I'm confused about why you would ask for permission as well? When I see the name I think of my Nana, technically my grandmother be we always called her Nana.
