These are a couple good op-ed pieces from the Los Angeles Times that I've been meaning to post for a while.

Interesting articles. David Cay Johnston's "The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use 'Plain English' to Rob You Blind" gives a different take on the first one, suggesting that government attempts to control business work in their favor; that big government works to the advantage of big business.

In Johnston's book is a plethora of instances of the kind of thing commented on in the first article. He first concentrates on AT&T, suggesting that all those government fees and taxes benefit AT&T more than either government or consumers, citing numerous ways in which the company manages to hang on to the money.

Mark, what do you think about the FCC possibly allowing Rupert Murdoch to buy the LA Times (along with the Chicago Tribune)?

We stopped getting the San Diego Union-Tribune & switched to the L. A. Times after the U-T was bought by someone who turned it from mildly offensively right-wing to intolerably right-wing. If Murdoch buys the L. A. Times, we may just stop getting a newspaper.

A good description of a proper division between government & private enterprise, and the phony economics in too much current political speech:

The following captures the whole mess IMO:

Washington's tug of war over the federal budget has many wonders, but the biggest one of all must be the lengths to which politicians and pundits will go to deprive Granny and Grandpa of $30 a month.... For the retiree trying to stretch an average monthly check of about $1,200 to cover housing, healthcare and every other necessity under the sun, it looms rather larger.

...just how far budget policy in Washington has become untethered from reality.... It's rare for bad research, bad economics and bad politics to come together to produce something so just plain bad.

I wonder if all those "bad's" are why many Americans feel . . . well, let's see . . . so bad???
