I have Googled every possible combination of words to describe the truly unique plot of a book that my cousin told me about several years ago. After at least 4 hours of frustrated searching, I am turning to the message boards (which I consistently read) for help.
Around 2000, my cousin told me about a book that she had found on her mom's nightstand. Our other aunt had lent it to her mom, and my cousin started reading it until her mom told her that it wasn't appropriate for her. My cousin described it to me as a "romance novel," but I'm not totally convinced that it could be classified as a romance, given the plot. I can't remember if this had happened in or around 2000, or if it had happened a long time ago, so I can't even pinpoint when the book was published. My guess is that it was published in the 1980s or early 1990s.
After my cousin told me about the plot of the book, I have never been able to forget it. A few years ago, I was able to find the title by searching Google and Amazon, but now I can't find it again. I desperately want to find the title of this book so that I can read it and see if it is really as bizarre as I remember it!
Here are the details of the plot:
The heroine is on a ship. It is either coming from or going to Ireland. There is a shipwreck and she is the only survivor (or so we are told). She is adopted by a family (in the United States? or in Ireland?) but she does not remember the shipwreck so she does not believe that she is adopted.
As the heroine grows up, she is romantically attracted to her brother, whom she believes to be her biological brother. She fights these feelings. At some point, she has sex with a Catholic priest on the beach. (My cousin was unsure about how this fit into the overall plot, but this was definitely part of the story.)
To avoid her feelings for her (adopted, but unknown to her) brother, the heroine leaves her family. She eventually falls in love with another man, and they get married and have a child. When the child is born with some sort of genetic defect, it is discovered that the heroine and her husband are actually biological siblings, and the husband also survived the very same shipwreck!
The heroine and her husband get divorced and she returns to her not-biological brother. My cousin didn't get to finish reading the book but she was pretty sure that the heroine and her "brother" confess their love for one another and live HEA.
The only other details that I have about the book are that it was written by an Irish author (possibly?) and that it had a title that sounded something like Mists from Stones. Or it had something to do with stones and gems in the title.
I would be eternally grateful to whoever can figure out the title of this book! I can just imagine the look on my cousin's face when I reveal that I have retrieved this lost novel which was the source of so much discussion between us when we were teenagers. |
