All I can remember is that its a historical and the heroine has disgusting hair. Her maid glues feathers into the heroine's hair and, instead of washing it, just cuts them off. I think there may be powder involved, too. Anyway, the heroine's hair is a mess of glue, quill tip ends and general dirt. Maybe she's a young woman and easily cowed to allow it to happen?
That's all I can remember and I've been racking my brain ever since that scenario popped into my head.
Any assistance appreciated!

| It's Eloisa James' An Affair Before Christmas. An overbearing mother and lots of hair powder too. |

It has nothing to do with being young or easily cowed- it was just the fashion. To get hair in the very high styles of the 1770s and 1780s took a lot of effort and was definitely not comfortable. Hair would often be kept up for a month without taking it down. If you look at pictures of Marie Antoinette, you can see how complicated it could be. |

I have friends with gorgeous, silk-floss, dead straight hair which suits them beautifully, who spend a fortune on perms ... and I have friends with gorgeous, vibrant, curly hair, which looks fabulous, who spend a fortune on straightening their hair. I think they are all insane. Fashion seems to be whatever they don't have. That said, 18th century hair fashions could be viewed as a little extreme, but I have to wonder what will be said in 200+ years about some of our more extreme fashions in hair, not to mention body piercing.
Elizabeth - cheating shamelessly with hair colour. |
