I believe this is set in the civil war - the heroine was raped by soldiers and her brother killed defending her mother. The hero comes and I think his mother owns a brothel - he helps the heroine and eventually they marry.
Any ideas?

Have you looked at Candace Camp's books. I know that she used the civil war setting in some of her books.
