Are you a fan of Lord John Grey books? What about Gabaldon's newest LJG featuring Jamie? I've read all kind of mixed reviews in various places and am anxious to see what take y'all have on these two topics.
I'm a Gabaldon Jamie/Claire fan (ducking any thrown tomatoes here  ) and have read all but one Lord John book, but not the Scottish Prisoner yet.
Any thoughts you want to share? |

I have it in my TBR pile but haven't read it yet! I actually enjoyed the last Lord John book better than the last Outalnder book.

I haven't read the latest yet but I've enjoyed the Lord John books and short stories more than the main Outlander series (where I've skimmed a lot) . I find them tighter, faster paced, wittier reads - with a far more engaging and enjoyable narrator. I'll say it .... I LOVE Lord John whereas I only really like Jamie and don't much care for Claire. I also enjoy John's family and friends and their interactions and the settings more than I do those in Outlander.

Luckily I like Claire, so I'm good with Jamie and Claire, but I agree with you that the LJG books are better written and full of likable characters!
The last Outlander book meandered so much I did some skimming as well.

The Outlander books are my favourite books of all time - and I just can't get into the Lord John series at all. I've tried! I might try the newest one since it has Jamie. I think I need Jamie to keep me interested.

| I love the Outlander series but don't like the Lord John series. I did enjoy the Scottish Prisoner probably because I felt Jamie was the main character and Lord John the secondary one which suited me. I would recommend it. |

I love John (the character) but don't always enjoy his books -- primarily, I think, because they're straight mysteries and that's just not my genre.
I wanted to read Scottish Prisoner because I wanted to see how Jamie and John went from enmity to amity, and this book fills in a lot of those gaps. It was also nice to see John interact with Hal (John's brother...the Duke of Pardloe) and nice to see Jamie and Willie together.
I have a feeling that some of what happens in Scottish Prison will at least be REFERENCED in the next Outlander book. The two series are no longer functioning as independent series. |

This is me too. I love John but am not so interested in mystery, or more or less military settings.

Me too again. I've had the book since it came out and I can't believe how well I'm holding out reading it until just the right time, or a special time. Delayed gratification isn't usually one of my strengths.

You're very likely correct. I'm in awe of Diana Gabaldon's skill and talent.
For instance, while her last book didn't appeal to some folks, I thought how she showed how time and space can vary to our senses was remarkable: (1) the ship battles where people couldn't see, know where they were, or even exactly what was happening; (2) the Battle of Saratoga where time speeds up, slows down, or is suspended, and how what we would consider a long distance in terms of miles went quickly compared to how long it could take a soldier to move a few feet; and (3) Willie's being lost in the wilderness where time, place and orientation were all lost. Were those the typical scenes we see in fiction, with lots of dialogue, action and character development? No, but they were masterly IMO. |

Good to know I'm not the only one! Of the main series, I've only read the first one and thought it was OK but nothing special. Bear in mind that I dislike both time travel books and Scotland as a setting so OUTLANDER never really stood much chance... And I felt a bit sorry for poor Claire's husband stuck in WW2 while she was gallivanting around with her young toyboy  .
However, I adore the Lord John books - well, the two that I have read at any rate. Like PWNN, I find him to be a much more engaging and likable narrator, and am much more interested in the setting. However, because I like Lord John so much, I keep hoping that he manages to steal Jamie away from Claire. I gather that that doesn't happen [sigh]...

I love the Outlander Series and yes, was disappointed with the last book
I read the scottish Prisoner and truth be told, if Jamie wasn't in it, I wouldn't have read it.
John Grey is ok, but only would read him in the outlander series. |

I just finished reading The Scottish Prisoner myself, I enjoyed it but agree about the Jamie part. I really didn't care about the plotline around the guy they were after, in fact I've already forgotten his name. But I did enjoy the Jamie and Jamie/Lord John Gray interaction.
