I have several "collections" on my Kindle that are books I like enough to want to be able to read again with ease. This one, of historical romances, is the largest.

I also have "Chit Lit I Love," "Bad Guys, Good Sex, True Love," Oh, Oh It's Magic," and, for all the books I want to find the time to read, "Up Next in Love."

Heh...I was wondering the same. Maybe because they are on the "hot" side?
Also, the font is huge. But, whatever.

Here's the answer to that taken from Wikipedia.

Quote:
The modern romance genre was born in 1972 with Avon's publication of Kathleen Woodiwiss's The Flame and the Flower, the first romance novel "to [follow] the principals into the bedroom." Aside from its content, the book was revolutionary in that it was one of the first single-title romance novels to be published as an original paperback, rather than being first published in hardcover, and, like the category romances, was distributed in drug stores and other mass-market merchandising outlets. The novel went on to sell 2.35 million copies. Avon followed its release with the 1974 publication of Woodiwiss's second novel, The Wolf and the Dove and two sexy novels by newcomer Rosemary Rogers, Sweet Savage Love and Dark Fires. The latter sold two million copies in its first three months of release. By 1975, Publishers Weekly had reported that the "Avon originals" had sold a combined 8 million copies. The following year over 150 historical romance novels, many of them paperback originals, were published, selling over 40 million copies.

The success of these novels prompted a new style of writing romance, concentrating primarily on historical fiction tracking the monogamous relationship between a helpless heroine and the hero who rescued her, even if he had been the one to place her in danger. The covers of these novels tended to feature scantily clad women being grabbed by the hero, and caused the novels to be referred to as "bodice-rippers."

The first romances I read as a teen were all historicals--Rosemary Rogers, Barbara Cartland, etc...--and, at the time, they were called bodice rippers. Also, to me, bodice is a word I associate with women's clothing of earlier eras. So, in Dabney-speak, a hot historical a ballin' bodice ripper!

We've been batting around what's a BR ànd what's not for years now. I'd label very few of those books BRs. That wiki entry is shallow and woefully outdated. There's also a huge difference between contemporary romance and chick lit. But whatever, we can label our own personal kindle collections whatever we want.

Thanks for posting this list, Dabney! I want to look it over in more detail this weekend but I already caught a quick glimpse of some titles from favorite authors like Jo Goodman and Julie Anne Long that I haven't read yet.

I've been periodically checking the kindle store for Gaffney's To Have and to Hold. It isn't there. A google search for a digital edition returns only torrent sites. I'm curious to know if you erred in listing it in your kindle collections. I definitely want it but I'm waiting for a legal download.
