The only time I ever corresponded with an author was after reading a Lisa Jackson novel (I think it was Almost Dead) because I found a weird concidence - [SPOILER] the killer's name was Deidre and her assumed name was Elyse . . . my name is Elysa and my mother's is Deirdre. I just wrote Jackson to tell her that I solved the mystery because of the character names (more of an intuition than anything based in the plot).

As for angry letters, or even letters of praise, I do not feel the need to contact authors. If I like it I'll buy it, if I don't I won't. But I also do not frequent author sites that often unless I am looking for a backlist or trying to see if an anticipated title is coming out soon. This is the only site I spend much time on. I have to use the computer too much for school so I kind of hate the internet most days.

As for authors ruining characters, I stopped reading Catherine Coulter because of that. Besides turning rapists into heroes or vice versa I read The Valentine Legacy and The Nightingale Legacy before the Wyndham Legacy and absolutely loved Marcus and Duchess. When I finally went back for their story I found unrecognizable characters and had I read that one first, I wouldn't have read the other two and missed out on two of my favorites.

I've had a few authors who have disappointed me.

I found Mercedes' Lackey disappointed me after switching a book series mid-series from (Bedlam's Bard) from Urban fantasy to a story about runaway teens (geared towards getting teens help, nice, but not entertaining), and ditching the well-established triad relationship for a monogamous one- in between books with a semi-lame explanation. I really wondered what happened, did she have a change of heart? It seemed odd- she worked so hard to establish the relationship, then its like 'oops' that's all in the past now. This was one of my favorite series, so that switcheroo has always felt aritifical and like she wanted to take the series in a different direction and so ditched the controversial triad for something more conventional.

Laurell Hamilton, who I used to really adore has gone off the grid from her oriignal work. She used to write intriguing stories of mystery but now she's a porn-meister trying to one-up herself, and her character has gone from hero to villain.

I have never written these authors about my disappointement. I just don't buy their work, any longer, but I do admit, these changes have bugged me since I liked the characters and their exploits.

I have always wanted to write J.K. Rowling about the ending to the last Harry Potter book...seems childish but I started reading these books to my children who will be 18, 16 and 8. After reading these dang books for the last 10 years to one or the other child, I got hooked. I was so disappointed in how the book ended. I mean couldn't she have ended the series with a novelette, OH Heck NO she couldn't...it was like she was in such a hurry to be done with the dang books she just slapped on a ending. Not only was it a crappy ending but she flash forward 20 years! I feel like Claire Pellar and screaming "WHERE'S MY BEEF! I wanted to know how everyone was, like all of the Weasleys and several others. IDK after investing time getting to know all these characters and grown to love them she left them all out of a otherwise terrific book and left me hanging! UGG!
She's not the only Author I wanted to write to...but she is #1 on my biggest beef list! LOL

I think she started some sort of interactive website to give more info to people. I have never visited it because I watch the movies but - and I know it is blasphemy to some - I have never read the books. I think the site is called Pottermore.com.

There are parents who don't like their children because they aren't good looking enough, smart enough, strong enough, charming enough. I can't see how that translates to the writer approving of such behaviour or opinions..

Well, all too often, the parent (or sibling) is "forgiven" or (more often) his/her behavior is simply brushed over without discussion of the damage done to the hero/heroine.

To me, that sends the message that one MUST be a doormat and take it up the tailpipe because the person treating you that way is "faaammmiiilllyyy!"
