The Gun Runner is the first book in Scott Hildreth's Mafia Made series. According to the author, each book in the series works well on its own, so there's no need to worry about being left on a cliffhanger, waiting for things to be wrapped up in the next book.
Michael Tripp (Tripp) is a self-proclaimed bad boy who has moved to the city to increase the reach of his gunrunning business. So far, he's managed to stay out of the way of both the police and the mafia, and he would love to keep it that way. He has his own way of dealing with the evils of the world, and he doesn't want anyone more powerful to get in his way. But when he rescues a young woman from a vicious assault, Tripp finds himself at risk of losing everything he's worked so hard to achieve.
Terra Agrioli is the strong-willed, pampered daughter of a powerful mob boss. She loves the wealth and power her father's status affords her, but she wants more than a life as a mafia princess, and a part of her longs to exist far beyond her father's reach. When she and Tripp are thrown together, she gets far more than she ever bargained for.
Tripp and Terra's attraction to one another is practically instantaneous, but Tripp has a hard and fast rule for himself: no sex until he's known a woman for thirty days. So, he and Terra begin a relationship defined by flirting, a lot of dirty talk, and a great deal of time spent doing everything but actually having sex. If you like raunchy talk, you'll be in heaven; my iPad practically sizzled from all the heat building between these two!
Neither Terra nor Tripp is entirely honest with the other. Terra knows Tripp is involved with some pretty shady individuals, but she has no idea he's the arms trafficker her father is determined to get rid of. Tripp has no idea of Terra's connection to the mob. When their secrets are revealed, will these two be able to beat the odds and claim their HEA?
This is a fast-paced, suspenseful novel that is heavy on the sex, both in speech and in action. It's also a story that explores the shades of gray in which we all live. Neither the hero nor the heroine is all good or all bad. Tripp is an overly controlling man, determined to have his way in all things, but he lives by a strong moral code he has devised for himself and although he lives a life of crime, there are some definite lines he will not cross. For her part, Terra is fiercely loyal to her family, even though she doesn't want to live the life they want for her. She is obviously spoiled, and she tends to resort to temper tantrums the moment it looks like things won't go her way, but as the story progresses, we get to know the characters beyond our initial impressions and discover how truly multi-faceted they are.
I would definitely classify this as a dark romance. Scott Hildreth doesn't shy away from the violence that goes along with life in the mafia, so if you're bothered by excessive profanity, lots of sex, and graphic descriptions of violence, you might want to steer clear of this one. If, however, you like things related to the mafia with a huge dose of eroticism and a bit of suspense on the side, The Gun Runner might just be the book for you.
