Today’s Steals and Deals at AAR…..

If you don’t own this Duran, and you love historical romance, you’re missing out. In our review of Fool Me Twice, our reviewer wrote:

This is Meredith Duran, so the writing is of course a cut above. Some of the exchanges between Olivia and Marwick are nearly poetry. Not a wasted word or a wasted movement. My personal favorite is when Olivia sees the state of the books in his room, and simply can’t rest the urge too speak out. That alone is almost worth the price of admission.

But it also occurred to me as I was reading that one never need worry that a Meredith Duran book will descend into the realm of the silly – or worse, the ridiculous. Hers are serious books, in all the best ways. I loved the characters and the romance in Fool Me Twice. It’s a wonderful read, and well worth your time.

I read this book a month ago and it is still the novel I’m thinking about the most. It’s just phenomenal. In my “I have lost my mind I love this book so much” review, I wrote:

I read this book in a day. When I turned the last page, I found myself in tears, not because the ending is tragic but because it is not. For though The Light Pirate limns a not-so-removed world, one we rightly fear, it is a story of hope and resilience. Woven through its warnings is the belief that we can survive, even thrive, if we have one another. Wanda, mysteriously, causes the water she touches to glow–hence the title of the book. Brooks-Dalton’s prose is commensurately dazzling. Yes, she tells us, it is too late to go back to the world we imagined with its power grids, mega dams, and concrete lands. But, if we open ourselves to the world as it is, to others as they are, our future mayhap still gleam.

We’ve been loving Mimi Matthews’ work for some time now. We gave this one high marks. (Our review is here.) Our reviewer wrote:

The Work of Art is a delightful and moving romance. If you’re looking for a detailed historical background, a very interesting setup and two characters who work at making a strong, loving relationship despite all the challenges they face, don’t waste any time in settling in to read this one.

We adored this one back in the day. In our A review, our reviewer wrote:

I did not dislike a single thing in this book. Eagle’s intimate understanding of contemporary Indian life shines through in every sentence; her touch is deft and sure. The characters are immediately accessible to the reader, and their motivations, while hidden from each other, are crystal-clear to her audience. She’s done mountains of research, and it shows in the best way: you don’t notice it, you’re never overburdened by it. And she delivers past history just right – a drop at a time, revealing the past layer by layer, so that the reader discovers things gradually. You never feel as if you’re being hit on the head with it….

What the Heart Knows demonstrates that Kathleen Eagle knows this world, knows these people, knows about this kind of love. This book will not disappoint readers looking for a complex, heartwarming story.

This is one of the first books Suzanne Brockmann ever wrote. It is, in all ways, a story from another era, and if you can accept that, it’s a good read. In our review, we wrote:

I have to admit my bias in that Suzanne Brockmann is one of my favorite authors. I realize that different elements, especially Kelly’s age when the relationship begins, will make this book a downright failure for some readers. However, Brockmann’s writing style, endearing characters and storytelling skills go a long way for me, and I’d rather read a problematic book of hers than the best book from many other authors. For the new Brockmann reader, this might not be the best place to start, but for the fan, this will certainly be a nice snack while waiting for the next Troubleshooters or Team Ten book.
