I took a chance on Gillian Archer’s Build because it was in Kindle Unlimited - and I loved it. Fortunately, for just 99 cents, you can try right along with me whether or not you have KU. You won’t be sorry you did.

Austin Burns is hiding at his buddy’s Lake Tahoe house drinking away the knowledge that his murderous father has been given parole when Rachel Tannenbaum, the cleaner, shows up for work - and they get snowed in. Rachel is a single mother whose boyfriend abandoned her as soon as he heard she was pregnant. With her son safe with her mom, Rachel decides to relax and enjoy both the luxurious setting and the sexy man she’s trapped with. But what comes next?

What I liked here was that the characters have legitimate concerns and points of conflict. Rachel needs Austin to leave or stay. If he wants to be in her life - and more importantly, the life of her son - he has to be reliably present or not at all. This is a valid line to draw! When Austin screws up and disappoints her, it’s because he’s flattened by a life-changing revelation. This is a valid reason to mess up! Rachel is still right that Austin needs coping skills! Austin is still right that Rachel needs to consider circumstances! Hooray for a situation that isn’t one sided, oversimplified, or caused entirely by immaturity!

This was a quick read, but a very enjoyable and satisfying one. The rest of the Burns Brothers books (the sequels are why the father plot doesn’t get resolved here) aren’t as affordable as this one, but dang it, Gillian Archer, you got me. I’ll be buying the rest.
